Across two stints with RoS, I was tasked with the development of their flagship digital product, ScotLIS – a digital search and eCommerce tool for acquiring the title report for any registered property in the country. The challenge in developing this product was to recognise two distinct user groups and their varying use cases.
Their primary need was to find quick and accurate information about a property so that they could relay it to their client and continue with the buying/selling process. To validate these needs, I undertook a wide-ranging programme of research – travelling to professionals across Scotland conducting contextual observation, primary-source interviews and usability testing.
As a public body, there was a responsibility to ensure that the needs of the general public as relating to the uncovering of land and property information was far-reaching and inclusive. To do this, I worked with multiple stakeholders to organise a programme of research which would allow me to consult with the general public in person and from that, develop a set of robust needs which we did with great effect. This included pop-up stalls at multiple events including DIY/trade shows, public libraries and agricultural fairs.
ScotLIS is now considered the de facto tool for professionals across Scotland to understand more about land and property. The team's success was solidified in 2020 when it won the Legal Technology Award at the Scottish Legal Awards.
Whether you're starting a new business or improving an existing one, I can help.
